I see nothing to indicate they played a role other than wisdom he ignored.

because these were the basis of old china and before those revolutions it is what described the four olds old habbits, culture, ideas, and customs.
Basically Mao and the communist party believed that
religion is the opium of the masses and outlawed it to create a new china which they can completely govern
